Case Study: North East Derbyshire District Council
Logistics Learning World is working with North East Derbyshire District Council to deliver NVQs in Carry and Deliver Goods and Driving Goods Vehicles to 50 drivers working in the Refuse and Cleansing, and Grounds Maintenance departments.

With such a busy operation, Learning World put a member of staff on site for a week to ensure that all of the drivers could receive an initial skills profiling session before starting the NVQ assessment programme.

“The council has always been committed to training,” says Steve Jowett, Refuse and Cleansing Manager (Street Scene). “All of our teams receive regular employee development and performance reviews that help to identify training needs and areas for further development. Every part of the council is involved in up skilling and training – it’s a rolling process and Learning World’s NVQ delivery and assessment fits in well with the bigger programme.”

“Training benefits everyone - it motivates staff, helps them to perform better and it effectively helps my team to provide the best service we can.”

“When I heard about the NVQs for vehicle drivers, I saw they would be a real benefit to the refuse and cleansing team. Looking at the long term picture, I think the NVQs will provide the guys with good qualifications that they can take with them in the future as they develop their roles and careers. We have a lot of HGV drivers and with the Driver CPC EU Directive coming in next year, we’re mindful of making sure we are preparing adequately.“

“Our initial concern was around the availability of funding for the training as many of the guys had previously undertaken NVQs in Waste Management. However, Learning World was able to sort all the funding out so that the guys have been able to start an additional NVQ.”

“We are always under pressure to make sure that we look for best value in the services we employ, given that Learning World can deliver quality training and assessment at no cost to us, there’s really no reason why we shouldn’t take advantage of it.“

“Driver training is a good thing,” says Darren Mitchell, Grounds Maintenance Manager (Street Scene). “When Logistics Learning World contacted us and explained how they could help, we immediately saw the benefits to our operation. As we operate in public situations and spaces, we have a responsibility to ensure that we work safely at all times. The NVQs that my drivers will be achieving will really help to strengthen our good practice.
