Already on the Road to Success
Haulage and transport training provider Logistics Learning World (LLW) has got off to a flying start since being set up in April this year. Some 50 drivers from major aggregates and concrete supplier Ennstone Johnston have already gained their NVQ Level 2 Driving Goods Vehicles certificates after being assessed by LLW.

The first drivers to achieve their qualifications, who are based at the company’s Breedon depot in Leicestershire, were presented with their certificates by Logistics Learning World Chief Executive Officer, Helen Smith:

“I am delighted to be able to present the first NVQ certificates on behalf of Logistics Learning World,” she said. “Our first learners to achieve their qualifications will always be that little bit extra special to us.”

Ennstone Johnston Transport Manager, Steve Quinn, was very pleased with the way the training and assessment was delivered:

“The NVQ programme complimented our own training schemes very well and the LLW Assessors worked hard to ensure that our drivers could carry out their normal shift patterns with as little disruption as possible."

Mr Quinn added that if each component part of the training programme increases driver safety awareness by just 5%, then the company would end up with a far safer and more efficient team. Ennstone Johnston has asked LLW to assess and qualify more of its drivers on an ongoing basis.

The decision to launch Logistics Learning World was in response to demand from existing clients of its well established and highly regarded sister company, Construction Learning World.

Until now lorry drivers who supply materials to construction sites have been largely left out of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) training and NVQ qualification drive. Certainly, as the 2012 deadline for the card scheme approaches, there is a risk that unqualified drivers may not be allowed to bring their loads on site.

Logistics Learning World Business Development Director, Adrian Woodhouse explains, “Given the campaign to get everyone on site compliant, there is clearly an anomaly if some truck drivers, who need to visit construction sites, are not being given the chance to become qualified. Logistics Learning World has therefore been set up to anticipate the inevitable future needs of this sector - well ahead of the deadline."

Logistics Learning World is keen to point out that another benefit for drivers attaining a nationally recognised qualification is the reduction in exposure for employers of possible prosecution under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act. The police have stated that the health and safety culture within an organisation is a key consideration when incidents are being investigated.

Although initially catering for logistics within the construction industry, plans are already in place to roll-out the service to other sectors, including hauliers, delivery drivers, bus drivers and staff who operate vehicles in locations like airports and docksides.
