CASE STUDY - Level 3 NVQ , Sunlight Chesterfield
News
11th March 2010
Sunlight is the UK’s market leader in textile rental and laundering services for industry, commerce and the NHS and public sector. With 9,000 employees working at over 60 sites, Sunlight is a major UK employer serving many thousands of organisations in all sectors of the economy.
Recently, Logistics Learning World has been working across a number of Sunlight’s sites to deliver NVQs to drivers and managers.
"It’s taken about six months from start to finish and I’ve found the whole experience great, although it would be fair to say that the Level 3 does involve me having to write and prepare evidence for a variety of the NVQ criteria. It all linked very closely with my day to day job and I worked at home to get it all completed. Even with the additional workload, I’ve enjoyed it and it’s certainly improved my knowledge and management skills." "John, the Learning World assessor, was good to work with. He’s from a forces background, so we had much in common and it meant that we talked the same language!" "I’d say the qualification has given me a broader knowledge of the logistics chain and I’ve been able to pass this on to my colleagues and workforce. In fact, Lee the Transport Supervisor is now taking the Level 3 himself. Embedding learning and development across the company is so important as the whole organisation reaps the benefits." "I think I must have caught the training bug as I’m now progressing my development further by taking a Level 5 course from the Institute of Leadership and Management." One of the first managers to achieve a Level 3 NVQ was Craig Jamieson who is based at Leicester. "I left the Armed Forces three years ago," says Craig. "I originally was a chef and later moved into logistics before leaving the service. Subsequently I’ve been working at Sunlight as a Transport Manager." "I’ve been keen to improve my knowledge of the logistics environment and had been thinking about whether an NVQ would benefit me in the role and therefore the business overall." "On this site, we’ve had over 50 drivers working towards Level 2 NVQs in Carry and Deliver Goods, as well as Driving Goods Vehicles. It’s a company-wide development programme that Learning World is supporting." "Andrea, the Learning World Business Development Manager, came to deliver a presentation to all of the drivers on the site and I got talking to her about management level qualifications. Andrea explained about the Level 3 NVQ in Logistics Operations Management and how Learning World could assist with identifying potential funding and provide the assessment required at my workplace."
