Transportation of Goods and Materials (1 day)

Purpose of the Unit

The purpose of this unit is to enable the learner to safely and efficiently transport goods to a specified location. The learner must know how to operate and control a laden vehicle in accordance with all relevant regulations and establish the stability of the load before moving the vehicle. The learner will identify and negotiate hazards that may impede their ability to manoeuvre the vehicle in a safe, effective and controlled manner minimising the risk of accident, damage and disruption to vehicles, property and other road users. The learner will monitor and review progress including assessing and accommodating the impact of the load on fuel consumption, wear and tear and accidental damage of load and vehicle.

Communication will be an essential element of this unit highlighting the importance of keeping customers, colleagues and authorities informed of progress if there should be any deviation from the operating schedule.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Be able to stabilise load and maneuver vehicle in a safe, effective and controlled manner, engaging driving techniques that will optimise the operational efficiency of the vehicle.
  2. Identify possible hazards that may impede the operation of the laden vehicle.
  3. Be able to identify what remedial action should be taken if hazards occur or if the operating schedule is not being adhered to.
  4. Be able to monitor and review progress, effectively communicating any hazards or problems to the relevant authorities in accordance with the organisational policy.
  5. Be able to carry out the correct procedure in the event of accident or breakdown.
