Route Planning for the Delivery and Collection of Loads (1 day)

Purpose of the Unit

The purpose of this unit is to enable the learner to identify and select suitable routes to specific delivery and collection destinations. This should be done by using appropriate maps and the other information. The selection of routes should take account of the type of loads being transported, the vehicle being driven and the types of road used. The learner will be able to identify and avoid possible problems caused by restrictions such as low bridges, or weight limits, the learner will also need to know and keep to the relevant legal, safety and operating requirements associated with selecting routes for delivering or collecting loads.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Be able to locate destination and obtain the relevant information that will apply to possible routes from start off point.
  2. Determine possible routes to destination and the potential problems that may occur for each option.
  3. Evaluate possible routes with consideration to vehicle and load.
  4. Estimate driving distances and times and plan appropriate stops allowing for regulatory restrictions.
  5. Plan, schedule and document route in line with organisational requirements.
